Cardoso gives Williams injury update, says “It’s not a big thing”
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has finally shed light on the injury that kept Ronwen Williams out of the goalless first leg against Wiliete SC in Angola.
The Bafana Bafana captain was absent from the matchday squad as Sundowns drew 0-0 in their Caf Champions League defence, and the news from Pretoria is encouraging.
According to Cardoso, the problem began with a minor knock on the training ground.
“Ronwen should not be a big thing. He had a small contact yesterday in the training session, got some pain,” the coach said.
Cardoso admitted the club chose caution over risk. Protecting a player from a more serious knock could have a bigger impact on his future. The coach made clear that the club was not taking chances with their number one. “No, not really. So we expect to recover him promptly.”
Williams could return in the second leg at Loftus Versfeld on Friday, 23 October, when Sundowns host Wiliete. Team doctor Dr Carl Kgabo Tabane had already ruled out Williams and Aubrey Modiba for the first leg, describing both injuries as short-term and not serious.
The first leg ended 0-0, so the defending champions need a positive result at home to keep their continental campaign alive. Having their first-choice goalkeeper back would be a major lift for Sundowns as they chase progress to the next round of the CAF Champions League.
