Cartrack and Gcina Dhladhla Family Reach Agreement Amid Ongoing Investigation Into Her Death
Cartrack and Gcina Dhladhla’s Family Reach Truce as Investigation Into Tragic Death Continues
JOHANNESBURG | In a development that few expected after days of anger, grief and public outrage, the family of 29-year-old Gcina Dhladhla and Cartrack South Africa have agreed to move forward together as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Dhladhla, a call centre agent employed at Cartrack’s Rosebank offices, died after collapsing in a bathroom cubicle at the company’s Johannesburg premises on Saturday. Her death quickly became a national talking point, sparking intense scrutiny of workplace health and safety practices and raising difficult questions about how employers respond to workers experiencing illness.
The tragedy ignited widespread public concern and prompted political action. On Thursday, members of the African National Congress Youth League marched outside Cartrack’s offices, demanding accountability and justice for the young employee.
In the days following her death, family members and colleagues alleged that Dhladhla had been struggling with severe exhaustion and illness. According to relatives, she had submitted two medical certificates in the weeks before her death, but her requests for sick leave were reportedly denied.
The family further claimed that she faced threats of dismissal if she failed to report for duty and had previously received a warning for absenteeism despite presenting a valid doctor’s note.
They also alleged that on the day she died, Dhladhla informed supervisors that she was feeling unwell. According to the family’s account, she was advised to take pain medication and continue working.
Further allegations suggested that after she collapsed, there were delays in contacting emergency medical services, with concerns raised about the handling of the medical emergency.
While these claims remain the subject of ongoing investigations, a significant shift emerged this week when representatives of the Dhladhla family and Cartrack met face-to-face.
Emotional Meeting Opens Door to Healing
In a joint statement released after the meeting, both parties described the discussions as open, constructive and deeply emotional.
“Over the past few days, the family of Gcina Dhladhla has taken the time and space to grieve the unimaginable loss of a beloved daughter and family member. Yesterday, the family and representatives from Cartrack met to speak openly, share information, and discuss the way forward,” the statement said.
The meeting provided an opportunity for questions to be asked and information to be exchanged as both sides sought clarity regarding the events leading up to Dhladhla’s death.
According to the statement, both the family and the company are committed to allowing independent investigations to establish the full facts.
Family Representative Praises Transparency
Family representative Thamsanqa Mbuli said the discussions achieved their intended purpose.
“We’d like to thank Cartrack management for their cooperation, allowing an organic first discussion that was open and transparent. Our intended objective of clarifying the sequence of events leading up to our beloved daughter, sister, and colleague’s passing was achieved,” he said.
For Dhladhla’s family, the meeting appears to have brought a measure of comfort during an extraordinarily painful period.
“This is one of many important steps in the healing process for the family. What happened today has given me peace,” said her sister, Lindiwe Dhladhla.
Cartrack Pledges Full Cooperation
Cartrack South Africa CEO Joshua Victor expressed condolences to the family and reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting all investigations.
“Our colleague was a valued member of our team, and this loss has been deeply felt across the organisation,” Victor said.
“We remain deeply committed to supporting the family, cooperating fully with law enforcement and the Department of Labour, and ensuring that every fact is uncovered and established through the appropriate processes.”
Victor said the focus should remain on uncovering the truth through a fair and evidence-based process.
“At the heart of this tragedy is a much-loved daughter, family member, friend, and colleague. Everyone affected by her passing is grieving and searching for answers.”
Call for Patience as Investigations Continue
As emotions continue to run high across South Africa, the Dhladhla family has urged the public to allow official investigations to take their course.
“We thank South Africans for the love and support expressed, and wish to remind everyone supporting our family that we have not yet established all material facts surrounding our loss,” Mbuli said.
“We would like your support in allowing the investigation processes to unfold without pre-empting the outcome. Cartrack employees are our brothers and sisters as well. Let us not see them as enemies.”
In a gesture that reflects the family’s desire for unity rather than division, relatives have invited Dhladhla’s managers and colleagues to attend her funeral.
“We want Cartrack to feel welcome to attend the funeral and to show their support,” said her aunt, Phumzile Dhladhla.
As South Africa awaits the findings of independent investigations, the death of Gcina Dhladhla continues to resonate far beyond the walls of a Johannesburg office. What began as a workplace tragedy has evolved into a national conversation about employee wellbeing, workplace culture and the responsibility employers carry when workers raise concerns about their health.
For now, a grieving family, a company under scrutiny and a country searching for answers remain united by one shared goal: establishing exactly what happened in the final hours of a young woman’s life.
