DJ Warras Murder Suspects Return to Court as Deadly Rental Scam Unfolds
The highly publicised DJ Warras murder trial resumes today as key suspects Victor Majola and his girlfriend,Hlengiwe “Shangu” Buthelezi return to the dock to face formal charges of murder and conspiracy.
The case, which has sent shockwaves through the community, has exposed a deeply entrenched and violent “hijacked building” rental racket that ultimately cost the prominent DJ and businessman his life.
According to court details, the tragic sequence of events began when the lawful owner of a local apartment complex discovered that tenants had stopped paying their monthly rent.
Instead, a criminal syndicate had allegedly extorted the tenants, forcing them to pay protection and rental fees directly to the gang.
Desperate to reclaim his property and end the fraudulent scheme, the landlord turned to DJ Warras, who operated a registered private security company.
The landlord requested his professional intervention to clear out the criminals and secure the premises.
However, before the operation could be fully executed, DJ Warras was targeted and brutally assassinated in what investigators believe was a planned hit by the syndicate to protect their lucrative criminal enterprise.
The breakthrough in the police investigation came from an unlikely source—the suspects’ own celebration.
Following the murder, Buthelezi was overheard mocking the deceased, reportedly exclaiming in Zulu: “Siphelelephi isgora sikashibhoshi?” (Translated: “Where did the strongman end up?”).
The incriminating boast quickly drew the attention of law enforcement, acting as a crucial lead that tied the couple directly to the crime scene and the orchestration of the hit.
Majola and Buthelezi were arrested alongside a third accomplice, identified as the brother-in-law.
While the couple maintains their innocence ahead of today’s proceedings, the brother-in-law Armando Pacula opted for a plea explanation.
Pacula pleaded guilty to his role in the assassination, turned state witness, and has already been convicted and sentenced.
The prosecution is expected to leverage the brother-in-law’s confession and forensic evidence to secure a conviction against Majola and Buthelezi as the trial gets underway today.
