Home Affairs Opens Nationwide This Weekend as 370,000 Uncollected Smart IDs Put Voter Readiness in Focus

Home Affairs offices open weekend,

As South Africa gears up for a crucial voter registration weekend, the Department of Home Affairs is throwing open its doors across the country in an effort to ensure that no eligible citizen is left behind.

For two days only, Home Affairs offices nationwide will operate extended hours, giving South Africans a final opportunity to apply for or collect Smart ID Cards ahead of voter registration activities organised by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

The move comes as more than 370,000 Smart ID Cards remain uncollected at Home Affairs offices around the country, raising concerns that thousands of citizens could miss out on participating fully in the country’s democratic processes if they fail to secure their identification documents.

Home Affairs Extends Operating Hours Nationwide

The Department confirmed that all Home Affairs offices will be open on:

  • Saturday, 20 June 2026: 08:00 to 17:00
  • Sunday, 21 June 2026: 08:00 to 17:00

The extended operating hours are specifically aimed at supporting the IEC’s Voter Registration Weekend and helping citizens obtain the documentation required to register and vote.

Officials are encouraging South Africans to use the opportunity to either apply for a Smart ID Card or collect one that has already been processed and is waiting at a Home Affairs branch.

Hundreds of Thousands of IDs Still Waiting

The scale of the challenge is significant.

According to the Department, more than 370,000 Smart ID Cards are currently sitting uncollected at Home Affairs offices nationwide.

For many citizens, collecting these documents is more than a simple administrative task. A valid ID remains essential for accessing government services, employment opportunities, financial services and exercising the constitutional right to vote.

With voter registration activities taking place this weekend, officials hope the extended hours will reduce queues and make it easier for people to obtain the identification they need.

Schreiber: Democracy Begins With Having the Right Documents

Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber described the weekend as an important moment for South Africans to prepare for future electoral participation.

“This weekend presents an important opportunity for South Africans to ensure that they are ready to exercise one of their most fundamental democratic rights,” Schreiber said.

He noted that the department’s decision to extend operating hours nationwide is intended to remove barriers and make it easier for citizens to obtain the Smart ID Cards required for voter registration and participation in elections.

The minister also stressed that identification documents play a far broader role in everyday life.

An ID, he said, is not only a tool for democratic participation but also a gateway to opportunities, essential services and economic inclusion.

Bringing Services Closer to Communities

The weekend initiative forms part of the department’s broader effort to improve access to Home Affairs services and bring government closer to citizens.

Schreiber linked the programme to the department’s wider “Home Affairs @ Home” vision, which aims to improve service delivery while ensuring that more South Africans can access critical documentation without unnecessary delays.

The department believes that extending operating hours during high-demand periods is one practical way of delivering on that commitment.

Citizens Urged Not to Wait Until the Last Minute

Home Affairs has issued a clear message to citizens who have not yet collected their Smart ID Cards or still need to apply for one: act now.

Officials are urging South Africans to visit their nearest Home Affairs office during the extended operating hours this weekend rather than waiting until the last minute.

With hundreds of thousands of IDs already waiting on collection shelves across the country, the department hopes the voter registration weekend will not only strengthen electoral participation but also help thousands of citizens secure one of the most important documents they will ever own.

For many South Africans, the journey to the ballot box starts with something simple but essential: collecting an ID card that is already waiting for them.
