KZN Legislature Signals Readiness to Swear In NFP’s Ivan Rowan Barnes Pending Formal Court Order
The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has formally declared its readiness to move forward with the swearing-in process of Ivan Rowan Barnes as a Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), following a decisive legal outcome in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
In an official response addressed to the National Freedom Party (NFP) Secretary General, Mr. S.B Xaba, the Legislature acknowledged correspondence regarding the judgment delivered by the Honourable Judge Mngadi.
The legal dispute over the parliamentary seat has drawn significant attention, but the provincial assembly has reiterated its stance to uphold judicial integrity.
“The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature is committed to complying with and giving effect to all duly issued court orders,” the administration noted in its letter.
While the NFP has requested immediate implementation of the court order dating back to September 15, 2026, the Legislature clarified that it must follow standard administrative protocols.
Officials are currently awaiting the official distribution of the finalized written judgment and formal court order before taking final action.
The Speaker of the Legislature Nontombeko Boyce has already confirmed availability to preside over the official swearing-in ceremony.
Should the formal documentation be delivered as expected, arrangements are being put in place to host the swearing-in ceremony as early as Wednesday morning.
This transition marks a pivotal operational shift for the NFP delegation within the provincial legislature, clearing up internal seat successions that have heavily relied on ongoing court mandates.
