KZN Locks Down Comrades Marathon Route as Security Forces Move to Protect 21,000 Runners
Authorities Declare No-Fly Zone and Deploy Undercover Officers Ahead of World’s Largest Ultra-Marathon
As thousands of runners prepare to test the limits of human endurance on the roads of KwaZulu-Natal, an extensive security operation is being rolled out to ensure the 2026 Comrades Marathon remains safe, secure and incident-free.
More than 21,000 athletes are expected to take part in the 99th edition of the Comrades Marathon, widely known as the Ultimate Human Race. With spectators expected to line the route in their thousands, law enforcement agencies say months of planning have gone into safeguarding one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting events.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) has confirmed that a comprehensive safety and security strategy is now in place for the 2026 uprun between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
Months of Planning Behind Massive Security Operation
KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said various government departments, security agencies and operational partners have been working together for months to prepare for the event.
According to Netshiunda, extensive planning sessions have resulted in a coordinated operational plan aimed at protecting runners, race officials and spectators throughout the marathon weekend.
“The Comrades Marathon Association, working together with both eThekwini Metro and uMgungundlovu traffic officials, has communicated road closures, and road users are urged to cooperate with law enforcement officers during the Comrades Marathon weekend,” he said.
Entire Marathon Route Declared a No-Fly Zone
One of the most significant security measures announced ahead of the race is the declaration of the entire Comrades Marathon route as a no-fly zone.
Only authorised operational aircraft and drones will be permitted in the airspace during the event.
Netshiunda warned that any unauthorised drone activity would be dealt with immediately and in accordance with the law.
Authorities have also vowed to crack down on the display of banners carrying inappropriate or politically aligned messages on bridges, road signs and buildings along the route.
Officials say such displays will be removed and addressed in line with municipal by-laws and relevant legislation.
Undercover Officers Deployed to Crime Hotspots
While the Comrades Marathon has long been celebrated as a showcase of athletic excellence and community spirit, law enforcement officials remain alert to criminal activity that can accompany large public gatherings.
Netshiunda revealed that incidents involving motor vehicle theft and theft from vehicles were reported during the 2025 race.
In response, police have identified key crime hotspots and have strengthened security deployments in those areas.
Both uniformed and undercover officers will be deployed along the route and in surrounding areas to deter criminal activity and respond rapidly to any incidents.
Spectators have been urged to remain vigilant, secure their belongings and stay aware of their surroundings throughout the event.
Full Security Presence for Global Sporting Showcase
The security operation will involve multiple law enforcement units working alongside private security companies and dedicated Comrades Marathon marshals.
Authorities believe the combined effort will help ensure that the 2026 Comrades Marathon maintains its reputation as a world-class sporting spectacle.
As runners prepare to tackle the gruelling challenge between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, organisers and security officials are sending a clear message: every effort is being made to ensure that the focus remains on the athletes, the achievement and the spirit of one of South Africa’s greatest sporting traditions.
