Metro Police Officer Arrested in Alleged Jobs-for-Bribes Scam After Dramatic Chase to eThekwini Headquarters

A Durban Metro Police officer accused of soliciting bribes from aspiring recruits was arrested after a dramatic confrontation that reportedly unfolded at eThekwini Metro Police headquarters, raising fresh questions about corruption allegations surrounding municipal police recruitment.

Constable Zwile Ximba appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was released on bail after being charged with corruption. His arrest follows allegations that he accepted money from a woman in exchange for securing her a position within the municipality’s police force.

The incident has reignited concerns about the integrity of one of the city’s largest recruitment drives, which attracted tens of thousands of applicants hoping to join the metro police.

Alleged Bribe Sting Leads to Arrest

According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, Ximba allegedly arranged to receive money from a woman after promising to assist her in obtaining a job within the metro police.

The woman’s family allegedly became suspicious and orchestrated a sting operation. During the alleged exchange, security guards reportedly confronted the officer, triggering a chaotic sequence of events that ended at eThekwini Metro Police headquarters at 16 Archie Gumede Place in Durban’s CBD.

Sources claim the officer fled the scene in a vehicle before making his way to the headquarters, where colleagues initially struggled to understand what was unfolding.

One source alleged that security personnel remained determined to see the matter investigated and insisted that the Hawks, formally known as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, be called in.

The Hawks subsequently became involved and Ximba was arrested.

Recruitment Documents Allegedly Found

The case has sparked wider concerns after allegations emerged that Ximba was found in possession of documents and materials linked to the municipality’s police recruitment and screening processes.

Sources questioned how a relatively junior officer allegedly obtained access to such information.

According to those familiar with the matter, Ximba recently joined the eThekwini Metro Police from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and was still considered relatively new to the municipal force.

Questions are now being asked about whether he acted alone or as part of a broader network allegedly involved in manipulating recruitment processes.

Corruption Allegations Cast Shadow Over Recruitment Process

The arrest comes against the backdrop of longstanding allegations that some applicants are able to secure positions through payments and political connections rather than merit.

Several sources claimed that concerns about corruption within recruitment structures have circulated for years, although municipal authorities have consistently denied wrongdoing and challenged accusers to provide evidence.

The allegations extend beyond the officer’s arrest, with claims that politically connected individuals may have influence over appointments and promotions within law enforcement structures.

No evidence has yet been publicly presented to substantiate those broader allegations, and no additional arrests have been announced.

Thousands Still Waiting for Recruitment Outcomes

In January, the eThekwini Municipality announced that approximately 62,000 applicants would undergo screening as part of a major recruitment drive for the metro police.

The screening process was expected to be completed months ago. However, some applicants have complained that they are still waiting for feedback despite successfully completing physical fitness and running assessments.

Critics of the recruitment process argue that uncertainty and delays have fuelled suspicions among hopeful candidates, many of whom have invested significant time and effort in pursuing careers in law enforcement.

The municipality has repeatedly maintained that recruitment processes are conducted fairly and in accordance with established procedures.

Metro Police Confirm Arrest and Suspension

Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu confirmed that Ximba had been arrested on corruption charges.

“A case of corruption has been opened, the officer appeared in court, and he was released on bail. He has been suspended with immediate effect, and both the criminal investigation and internal disciplinary processes are underway,” Zungu said.

He added that the metro police would cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to ensure the matter is thoroughly investigated.

Zungu also urged members of the public who may have been asked to pay money in exchange for employment opportunities to report such incidents to the relevant authorities.

Investigation Continues

As investigators work to establish the full extent of the alleged scheme, the case has intensified scrutiny of recruitment practices within the eThekwini Metro Police.

For thousands of job seekers still waiting for answers, the arrest has amplified concerns that opportunities intended for deserving candidates could be vulnerable to corruption.

Authorities have indicated that both criminal and internal investigations remain ongoing, with further developments expected as the case progresses.
