Mpho Mafole Murder Trial Delayed Again as Family’s Search for Justice Drags On

Ekurhuleni auditor murder

Nearly a year after the shocking assassination of Ekurhuleni’s Chief Audit Executive, Mpho Mafole, the murder case has once again been postponed, leaving his grieving family frustrated and desperate for answers.

The latest delay unfolded at the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday, where the accused, 40-year-old Thabani Goodwill Nsthalintshali, made a brief appearance before proceedings were pushed back yet again.

For Mafole’s loved ones, the postponement represents another painful chapter in a case that has become synonymous with unanswered questions and delayed justice.

A Murder That Sent Shockwaves Through Ekurhuleni

Mafole was gunned down on 30 June 2025 in what investigators believe was a drive-by assassination along the R23 in Essen Park.

His killing sent shockwaves through municipal and governance circles across South Africa.

The slain auditor had reportedly been involved in investigating serious financial irregularities within the City of Ekurhuleni. An interim report linked to his work allegedly flagged approximately R1.8 billion in irregular expenditure and procurement failures relating to a controversial chemical toilets contract.

While investigations into his murder continue, the motive remains a matter of significant public interest.

Court Proceedings End in Another Postponement

Inside the courtroom on Wednesday, family members and friends packed the public gallery, many wearing T-shirts bearing Mafole’s image in a visible display of support and remembrance.

Members of the media were granted permission to film the proceedings.

During the hearing, the defence informed the court that it was engaged in negotiations with the State regarding a potential agreement and intended to submit a draft proposal by 1 July 2026.

Following discussions between the prosecution and defence, the matter was postponed to 24 July 2026 to allow the pre-negotiation process to continue.

The accused will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

The latest postponement marks the fifth delay in the case since court proceedings began.

“We Want Nothing But Justice”

Outside court, Mafole’s father, Kiki Mafole, spoke candidly about the emotional toll the repeated delays have taken on the family.

He said the prolonged legal process was making it increasingly difficult for the family to find closure.

“The case has been prolonged. It is now the fifth time it has been postponed. We want justice. We want nothing else but justice. Justice will give us closure.”

His words reflected the growing frustration of a family still struggling to process the loss of a son they describe as ethical, principled and deeply respected.

A Family Still Living With the Pain

Almost a year after the fatal shooting, Kiki Mafole said the pain remains as raw as ever.

The family, he explained, continues to grapple with the reality that Mpho is gone.

“I am not going to lie to you, but it’s tough. It’s very tough for us. We are devastated as a family because he was our only son. He was a very ethical and principled young man.”

As the legal process stretches on, Mafole’s family faces another month of waiting, hoping that the next court date will bring them one step closer to the justice they believe their son deserves.

For now, the case remains unresolved, and one of South Africa’s most closely watched municipal murder investigations continues to raise questions that have yet to be answered.
