Police arrest murder suspect after tracing vehicle used to dump body in North West

SAPS

A routine community patrol has led to a major breakthrough in a murder investigation after police tracked down a vehicle allegedly used to dump the body of a 51-year-old man in Letlhakaneng Village, near Letlhabile, in North West.

The dramatic investigation resulted in the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect, who is expected to appear before the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 July 2026, on a charge of murder.

The victim’s body was discovered on Tuesday after community patrollers noticed suspicious activity involving a white Volkswagen Polo travelling through Letlhakaneng Village.

According to police, the vehicle stopped along a roadside before an unidentified man’s body was allegedly dumped onto the street. Moments later, the Polo sped away, leaving shocked patrollers to alert authorities.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the 51-year-old victim lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene, where paramedics confirmed the man had died.

A murder case was immediately opened, with investigators launching an intensive search for those responsible.

The investigation took a decisive turn after community patrollers provided police with the registration number of the vehicle they had seen leaving the scene.

Using those details, detectives traced the vehicle and arrested a 25-year-old suspect on Thursday.

During a forensic examination of the Volkswagen Polo, investigators allegedly discovered bloodstains beneath the rear seats, strengthening the investigation into the victim’s death.

Police also seized an AK-47 rifle and a pistol from the suspect.

Both firearms have been sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the fatal shooting.

While the investigation remains ongoing, preliminary findings suggest the murder may have been linked to a financial dispute.

The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he will face a charge of murder as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests.
