SAPS Comrades Marathon

Hundreds of Police Officers Gather Ahead of the Ultimate Human Race

Durban, KwaZulu-Natal | With anticipation building ahead of the 99th edition of the Comrades Marathon, hundreds of South African Police Service (SAPS) members gathered in Durban for an official welcome ceremony that celebrated determination, unity and the spirit of one of the country’s most iconic sporting events.

A total of 515 SAPS runners from across South Africa were officially welcomed by police management at SAPS Durban Central as the final countdown to the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon entered its last stretch.

The gathering brought together officers from every province, creating a powerful display of camaraderie and national pride ahead of Sunday’s race.

Gauteng Officers Ready for the Challenge

Among the 515 runners were 93 SAPS members from Gauteng, including 20 novice runners preparing to tackle the gruelling Comrades Marathon for the first time.

For many of the first-time participants, the race represents months of sacrifice, intensive training and unwavering commitment. The Comrades Marathon, often referred to as the “Ultimate Human Race”, tests both physical endurance and mental resilience over a demanding ultramarathon distance.

As race day approaches, emotions are running high among the newcomers, who will join thousands of athletes from around the world on one of the most challenging courses in road running.

Message of Resilience and Hope

During the ceremony, SAPS senior management delivered messages of encouragement and support, urging participants to embrace this year’s Comrades Marathon theme: “Ska Fela Moya” or “Never Lose Spirit”.

The message resonated strongly with officers preparing to take on the demanding race, many of whom balance their training schedules with the daily responsibilities of serving communities across the country.

The atmosphere in Durban reflected more than just preparation for a sporting event. It highlighted the resilience, discipline and determination that define both policing and long-distance running.

Spirit of Unity on Display

As the hours tick down to the start of the marathon, a strong sense of unity was evident among SAPS members gathered from every corner of South Africa.

The welcome ceremony served as a reminder that the Comrades Marathon is about more than crossing the finish line. It is also about perseverance, teamwork and the ability to overcome challenges through collective support.

Special recognition was given to the 20 Gauteng SAPS novice runners, who will take their first steps into Comrades history when they line up alongside thousands of fellow competitors.

For these officers, the journey to the start line has already been a remarkable achievement. Now, their focus turns to completing one of the most demanding races in the world while carrying the hopes and support of their colleagues with them.
