Soweto Derby Sells Out in Under Six Hours as Thousands Miss Out

South Africa’s biggest rivalry just proved it again. Tickets for the first Soweto Derby of 2026/27 vanished in less than six hours after going on sale on Wednesday, 14 October.

Orlando Pirates, the home side, put the tickets on MyTicket from around midday. Within minutes, virtual queues swelled into the tens of thousands. By early afternoon, broadcaster Robert Marawa reported that more than 21,000 of the roughly 63,680 general-sale tickets had gone. Level 2 was completely sold out. Tickets were flying at more than 560 per minute.

By late afternoon, nothing was left.

Fans took to social media, some celebrating seats secured, others venting at missing out. One supporter joined the queue over an hour late and still got through.

The clash is set for Saturday, 31 October at 15:30 at FNB Stadium. Pirates host Kaizer Chiefs in a Betway Premiership showdown. Adult tickets started at R140, children’s from R50. Packages with return Gautrain bus or Rea Vaya transport were also on offer, along with hospitality through MyTicket and SAIL.

Parking was sold separately, and cars without pre-booked parking won’t be allowed into the precinct.

February’s derby at the same venue sold out online in about two hours. This time, demand was driven by the rivalry itself and both clubs’ league positions. Pirates have been among the strongest starters this season, while Chiefs keep chasing consistency.

There were no physical outlets, a deliberate move to fight fraud and improve safety. Fans who hit technical glitches or waited too long were left empty-handed. Officials have warned against unofficial sellers. Only MyTicket barcodes will get you in.

On 31 October, the 94,700-capacity FNB Stadium is expected to be packed to the rafters. For those with tickets, the countdown has begun.
