State to Add Vehicle Theft and Smuggling Charges Against Suliman Carrim

North West businessman and former ANC regional treasurer Suliman Carrim is set to face additional charges relating to alleged vehicle theft and attempted smuggling.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the 49-year-old is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Thursday, 22 October 2026, where he will face two counts linked to alleged motor vehicle theft.

Carrim was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on 15 October while preparing to board a flight to Dubai, with Saudi Arabia as his final destination.

His arrest followed allegations that he repeatedly failed to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and comply with its directives. He was subsequently charged with contravening the Commissions Act.

Carrim previously testified before the commission in March, when he was questioned about financial dealings involving businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala. He later missed scheduled appearances, citing health concerns, prompting the commission to pursue criminal charges against him.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe also confirmed that Carrim had been flagged by the SAPS Cold Case Unit in connection with an ongoing fraud and corruption investigation involving the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in the North West.

Meanwhile, Carrim remains in custody after the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court postponed judgment on his bail application to Wednesday, 28 October.

The State opposed his release, arguing that he posed a flight risk. However, investigators confirmed that his residential address and return flight ticket had been verified.

Carrim has denied attempting to flee the country, maintaining that he was travelling to Saudi Arabia for religious purposes and intended to return to South Africa.

The additional charges add to Carrim’s legal troubles as he continues to face proceedings linked to his alleged failure to cooperate with the Madlanga Commission.
