On Monday and Tuesday, video clips circulated on social media of the ANC members handing out Albany branded breads to communities.

Before the breads were handed out, a lady is seen telling members of the ANC that President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized that members must think out of the box when they do door to door campaigns.

On Wednesday, National Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said the organisation noted with serious concern the circulation of social media images depicting the distribution of food parcels while displaying the name, colours and branding of the ANC by Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Health Bernice Swarts.

“These images create the false impression that the activity forms part of an official ANC programme or campaign.The ANC wishes to state categorically that the distribution reflected in these images is not an ANC campaign and was not authorised by any structure of the organisation.

“The organisation therefore distances itself from these actions and emphasises that the activity was not undertaken under the mandate or authority of the ANC.The ANC recognises that many of its members across the country play an important social responsibility role in their communities by assisting vulnerable households and supporting local initiatives. Such acts of solidarity reflect the values of Ubuntu and service to the people that define the movement,” said Bhengu.

Bhengu said however, members are reminded that acts of charity or community assistance must never be conducted using the ANC name, colours or branding, nor should they be presented as organisational programmes when they are private initiatives.

“The movement remains committed to advancing lasting solutions to poverty, unemployment and inequality in line with its historic mission to build a better life for all,” she said.

The accused and the complainant knew each other and the accused was living with the complainant’s family at the time of the offence.

KZN National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said on the day of the incident, the complainant’s mother went into town leaving the complainant in the care of the accused and other minor children.

“The accused called the complainant into the house and instructed the other children to play outside. He then raped her and told her to bathe afterwards. When the complainant’s mother returned from town, she noticed that the complainant was behaving unusually and that her skirt was wet. Upon questioning, the complainant confided in her mother that the accused had raped her and mentioned that he had done so on a previous occasion as well. The mother confronted the accused, but he denied the allegations,” she said.

Kara said the matter was reported to the police and the complainant was taken to the Stanger Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) for medico-legal examination and psychosocial support. The accused was subsequently arrested.

In court, Prosecutor Bongani Sibisi led the evidence of the complainant and her mother (as the first report witness). The doctor who conducted the medical examination on the complainant also testified on behalf of the State.

“In aggravation of sentence, the State submitted a Victim Impact Statement (VIS) compiled by the complainant and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Sfiso Nene. In her statement, the complainant said that the offence had shattered her dream of participating in the reed dance. She further mentioned that she now struggles to concentrate on her schoolwork,” she said.

Kara said in addition to the life imprisonment sentence, the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm.  She said the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The accused was also sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for malicious damage to property, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.

In the fall of 08 June 2025, Mokgadi was relaxing at her mother’s house after ending a toxic relationship with Mokgehle. She was relieved after opening a case against him for malicious damage to property. At the time, he was out on bail attending the case at Morebeng magistrate court.

Mokgadi and her mother were ambushed around 16:00 hours in the afternoon by Mokgehle who was armed with a sharp knife.

According to the limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba Mokgadi tried to flee, however her speed was too not speed enough to save her life. He caught up with her and stabbed her until she collapsed to the ground.

During the confrontation, the accused produced a knife and repeatedly stabbed the victim. She attempted to flee the house, but the accused chased after her and continued stabbing her until she collapsed to the ground.  Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and certified her dead.

The accused made his first court appearance before the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court on 09 June 2025. His bail application was opposed, and he remained in custody. The matter was later transferred to the Polokwane High Court, where the trial commenced on 02 March 2026 and concluded on 04 March 2026, resulting in the conviction and sentencing.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the investigating officer for the diligent investigation that ensured justice for Mohlaela family.

Limpopo SAPS Spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba on Wednesday, 10 January 2024, the 13-year-old victim was at home at Gedroogte village with the 35-year-old male accused who is also her stepfather when she decided to take a bath.

“She went to her mother’s bedroom to fetch clothes and found her stepfather who pushed her onto the bed. The accused forcefully undressed the victim and raped her. The incident was reported to the police who opened a rape case and immediately commenced with a manhunt of the suspect who was subsequently nabbed at Gedroogte Village on Friday, 12 January 2024.

Mashaba said Warrant Officer Choene Selolo attached to Mokopane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit was assigned to investigate the matter.

“Through her sterling detective work and abilities, she managed to oppose bail and ensured that the accused remained in police custody until his sentencing by the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s court on Monday,” said Mashaba.

The court ruled that his actions showed an extreme level of guilt, which means he cannot be considered for early release after fifteen years. Although he received the maximum sentence, he still has the right to appeal.

Investigators said the nurse injected mostly elderly patients with heavy painkillers and sedatives during overnight shifts. He was allegedly trying to reduce the amount of care work he had to perform.

The incidents took place between December 2023 and May 2024 at the hospital where he had worked since 2020. Prosecutors described his behaviour as cold and detached, saying he grew irritated with patients who needed more attention, acting as though he controlled who lived or died.

In court, it was revealed that he administered large doses of morphine and midazolam to numerous patients, leaving many of them unable to survive the effects.

He was arrested in 2024, and authorities have begun exhuming bodies to determine whether more victims may be linked to him. If additional evidence is found, he could face further trials.

The shocking case has reminded many in Germany of another notorious hospital killer, a former nurse who received a life sentence in 2019 for murdering dozens of patients over several years.

The civil society led organisation promoting the Charter of Positive Values expressed hope that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide.

Convenor of the MRM Provincial Interim Committee, Pastor Lesiba Kgwele remarked that the conviction which was realized within a short period will contribute towards restoring public confidence in the criminal justice system.

“We trust that the Fumba family will find closure in the knowledge that justice was done and commend the investigation officer, Constable Pholoso Mosenogi of the Ikageng Detectives and the prosecution team on the successful conviction,” highlighted Pastor Kgwele.

Kgwele urged men who are experiencing pressure in their relationships and personal lives to seek professional counselling instead of taking matters into their own hands.

He said that Ramoholokoane was driven by jealousy, insecurity as a well as control to commit a heinous and ghastly act as he suspected that his girlfriend was cheating on him with a 77-year-old neighbour whom he was reportedly cooking a meal.

“He abrogated his responsibility as to protect his live-in partner whom he claimed to have loved when he resorted to senseless violence, ending her life in a gruesome manner,” underscored Kgwele.

Evidence presented in court revealed that Ramoholokoane had stabbed the deceased with knife multiple times with two knives until she succumbed on the scene.

Police were called to the scene and arrested him on the same day. He remained in police custody until the conclusion of the trial.
