The Maphumulo Regional Court in KwaDukuza in the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) sentenced a 25-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a 9-year-old girl in the Maphumulo area in 2022.

The accused and the complainant knew each other and the accused was living with the complainant’s family at the time of the offence.

KZN National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said on the day of the incident, the complainant’s mother went into town leaving the complainant in the care of the accused and other minor children.

“The accused called the complainant into the house and instructed the other children to play outside. He then raped her and told her to bathe afterwards. When the complainant’s mother returned from town, she noticed that the complainant was behaving unusually and that her skirt was wet. Upon questioning, the complainant confided in her mother that the accused had raped her and mentioned that he had done so on a previous occasion as well. The mother confronted the accused, but he denied the allegations,” she said.

Kara said the matter was reported to the police and the complainant was taken to the Stanger Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) for medico-legal examination and psychosocial support. The accused was subsequently arrested.

In court, Prosecutor Bongani Sibisi led the evidence of the complainant and her mother (as the first report witness). The doctor who conducted the medical examination on the complainant also testified on behalf of the State.

“In aggravation of sentence, the State submitted a Victim Impact Statement (VIS) compiled by the complainant and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Sfiso Nene. In her statement, the complainant said that the offence had shattered her dream of participating in the reed dance. She further mentioned that she now struggles to concentrate on her schoolwork,” she said.

Kara said in addition to the life imprisonment sentence, the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm. She said the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Two murder accused are set to apply to be released on bail on the 27 January’ in the Ga- Rankuwa magistrate court in the North West while the family is leaving in fear after the gruesome murder of their daughter Lesego Masina.

Paulos Masina (not the biological father) who is the alleged mastermind and Maisela Freddy Kekana who is the lleged gunman appeared before the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

It was confirmed in court that the accused intend to apply for bail.

Now the family of Lesego fears for its safety as the accused in her murder prepare to apply for bail, a move that has sparked anger, anxiety and renewed calls for justice from the community.

The family stated that it is strongly opposed to any bail being granted, citing serious safety concerns and saying they fear for their lives should the accused be released on bail.

Two other suspects linked to the case remain at large.

Ofentse Masina, Lesego’s younger sister, thanked the community for standing with the family.

“We appreciate the community for the prayers, messages of encouragement and the presence of supporters at court. We feel protected and uplifted by the unity shown by the community,” she said.

Ofentse further said: “We call on the community to remain united, calm and vigilant as the case continues. Our focus remains on justice, accountability and safety, while allowing the legal process to take its course.”

The Masina urged the community to come out in numbers and that transport will be provided when the accused appears in court again on 27 January.

A palliative-care nurse from Wuerselen, in western Germany, has been handed a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering ten patients and attempting to kill twenty-seven others.

The court ruled that his actions showed an extreme level of guilt, which means he cannot be considered for early release after fifteen years. Although he received the maximum sentence, he still has the right to appeal.

Investigators said the nurse injected mostly elderly patients with heavy painkillers and sedatives during overnight shifts. He was allegedly trying to reduce the amount of care work he had to perform.

The incidents took place between December 2023 and May 2024 at the hospital where he had worked since 2020. Prosecutors described his behaviour as cold and detached, saying he grew irritated with patients who needed more attention, acting as though he controlled who lived or died.

In court, it was revealed that he administered large doses of morphine and midazolam to numerous patients, leaving many of them unable to survive the effects.

He was arrested in 2024, and authorities have begun exhuming bodies to determine whether more victims may be linked to him. If additional evidence is found, he could face further trials.

The shocking case has reminded many in Germany of another notorious hospital killer, a former nurse who received a life sentence in 2019 for murdering dozens of patients over several years.

Presided over by former acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, the commission is hearing testimony from a protected witness, known only as “Witness A.” The witness is expected to shed light on how political pressure and misconduct may have influenced decisions within key law enforcement agencies.

The proceedings, taking place at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College, have drawn national attention as citizens demand accountability and transparency in the institutions meant to uphold justice.

The inquiry forms part of broader efforts to restore public trust in the legal system and ensure that those in positions of authority are held responsible for any wrongdoing.

Tsakane, Gauteng – The Tsakane Regional Court has sentenced a 47-year-old man from Tsakane Extension 13 to four life terms for four counts of rape of a 13-year-old minor. The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently, with his name added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders and declared him unfit to work with children.

From December 2015 until April 2016 on four different occasions when the child would go to her elderly grandmother’s place In Tsakane Ext 13 to assist her with house chores. The family friend who is also a neighbor would call the child to his place, rape her and threaten to kill her if she told anyone the rape incidents until she fell pregnant.

In October 2016 when the 13-year-old minor had gone back to the doctor for her regular cancer treatment, the doctors discovered that she was 6months pregnant and had contracted Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). When the doctor enquired about the pregnancy, the child disclosed that she was raped by the family friend. The mother of the child reported the matter to the police, and the family friend was arrested in November 2016. However, the matter was provisionally withdrawn and was placed back on the roll in 2020 when the neighbor was summoned by J175.

In court he pleaded not guilty to the charges and denied raping the child, however the regional court prosecutor Tholwana Jessica Khakhathiba adduced evidence that proved the man’s guilt. During sentencing, his legal representative the man asked the court to deviate from imposing the prescribed minimum sentence due to his ill health which has deteriorated since his incarceration., but Khakhathiba urged for life imprisonment, because the man did not show any remorse and continued to maintain his innocence even after conviction. Furthermore, the man committed gruesome offences towards a defenseless child which was already suffering from a chronic illness. Not only did the man impregnate the child he also infected her with HIV and took away her innocence.

The prosecutor also read into the record the Victim Impact Statement (VIS) facilitated by the Court Preparation Officer, Nothando Mbatha, which detailed the psychological, academic, social and physical trauma the child suffered because of the rape incidents.

The court found aggravating circumstances far outweighed mitigating factors, agreeing with the state that the accused showed no remorse for the offences. The sentence was deemed appropriate.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the sentence, hoping it deters potential offenders and demonstrates its commitment to combating gender-based violence (GBV).

By Lwandile Hlekwayo

The idea that criminals run rampant without any repercussions has been the lens through which we view our society in this democratic age. This rhetoric is not apparent for Kyle May (33), who on Tuesday was sentenced to a year in prison for malicious injury to property at the Ethekwini Magistrate’s Court.

May, who is a repeat offender, could not be given the maximum sentence for his actions as his previous convictions were now older than 10 years. The courtroom was stunned to hear the magistrate speak strongly about May, as she believed he had not learnt anything from his previous encounters with Westville Prison. The magistrate also exposed the State’s negligence in charging May with malicious injury to property instead of attempted theft, as she stated that “nobody damages a gate motor with the intent to not enter and steal”.

The courtroom’s silence was deafening as the public watched the magistrate flex her might as she reprimanded May in a manner a parent would scold her child. The magistrate reminded May that going forward he cannot refer to himself as a primary caregiver to his child if he is in and out of prison. An error from the State led to May not being charged with attempted theft, and this led to him being sentenced to a year in prison. This highlights the important role police play in ensuring that offenders are charged accordingly, as mistakes such as these have serious repercussions.

May was arrested on the 14th of June 2025 after damaging the gate motor of a Durban property. The owner of the property triggered a silent alarm and Blue Security responded swiftly to apprehend May as they waited for the police to arrest him. The average South African is not privy to such information as we are constantly bombarded with news that unintentionally perpetuates hopelessness in our justice system and therefore is under the impression that criminals are constantly getting away with crime.

Kyle May will spend the next year in Westville Prison, proof that the system can work when all its parts align. His case won’t make national headlines or shift public perception overnight, but it represents a small victory in the daily grind of criminal justice. The magistrate delivered justice within the constraints she was given, even as she called out the State’s failure to charge appropriately. For the Durban homeowner whose property May targeted, and for the community Blue Security serves, this conviction matters. Perhaps the real story isn’t whether criminals face consequences—it’s whether we’re paying attention when they do.
