Two foreign nationals were arrested after police in Amersfoort, working closely with local farmers, managed to recover a Toyota Fortuner that had been stolen in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to police, officers received a tip-off from the Rural Safety Partnership, a network of farmers in the area, which helped them track down the Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 that had been reported stolen in Pinetown in November.

The SUV was spotted on the N11 on Wednesday, already being pursued by farmers. When the suspects realised they were cornered, they abandoned the vehicle and tried to escape on foot.

Police officers, with the support of the farmers, chased them down and arrested the two men, aged 43 and 45. They now face charges of possessing suspected stolen property as well as contravening the Immigration Act.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Mpumalanga’s acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the teamwork between law enforcement and the farming community, saying it shows how strong partnerships can help in tackling crime across the province.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Dr Cllr Mgcini Tshwaku, has welcomed the successful outcome of a joint law enforcement operation conducted in Mayfair, Johannesburg.

The operation, led by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Home Affairs, forms part of the City’s ongoing intelligence-led crime prevention and by-law enforcement initiatives.

During the operation, 217 women and 413 men were detained for contravening the Immigration Act, having been found in the country without valid documentation. All detained individuals are currently being processed by Home Affairs officials in full compliance with relevant legislation.

Dr Tshwaku commended the professionalism and commitment demonstrated by all agencies involved, stating:

“This operation is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when law enforcement agencies work together decisively. We will continue to intensify intelligence-driven interventions to restore safety and order in our communities.”

The MMC confirmed that further operations of this nature are planned across the city. The JMPD’s Tactical Response Unit (TRU) and K9 Unit have been tasked with intensifying investigations into criminal syndicates suspected of facilitating human trafficking and illegal immigration in the area.

Omotoso freed on technicality after Home Affairs blunder

Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso was released from custody today, May 13, following a procedural misstep by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs.

Omotoso had been arrested, on Saturday, May 10, in East London for alleged violations of the Immigration Act.

Under South African law, individuals detained pending deportation must appear in court within 48 hours of arrest. In Omotoso’s case, that deadline expired at 7h00 AM on Monday. However, he was only brought before the East London Magistrates’ Court at 2h00 PM seven hours too late.

The missed deadline resulted in Omotoso’s release on what legal observers have called a “technicality.” National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali confirmed the release, citing the department’s failure to comply with the required legal timeframe.

The Department of Home Affairs said it will assess its options once the court’s written judgment is issued.

Meanwhile, Omotoso’s legal team has launched an urgent application in the East London High Court, challenging Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber’s decision to declare the televangelist a prohibited person. They argue the declaration was procedurally flawed.
