A man claiming to be a militant commander has released a new video threatening further kidnappings across Nigeria. Wearing what looked like a military jacket, he boasted about recent abductions of schoolchildren in Kebbi and Niger states and warned that his group plans to target security officials, governors, and even President Bola Tinubu.

In the video, he said his group was not bothered by recent arrests, adding that the government had failed in its duty to protect citizens. He pointed to the jacket he wore, insisting it belonged to a Nigerian soldier, and declared that more high-profile abductions would follow.

He urged Nigerians to rely on divine protection rather than the government, claiming that authorities cannot guarantee safety. He ended the recording with a message to his followers on social media, saying they had “woken up” and wishing them a good day.

The latest threat comes shortly after two major school abductions. On November 21, armed men invaded St. Mary’s Papiri Private Catholic Secondary School in Agwara, Niger State, taking away dozens of students and teachers. Community members who visited the school after the attack described it as a well-coordinated operation carried out between 2am and 3am.

Local officials later confirmed the incident, saying early information suggested that more than 100 students and teachers were abducted from the mixed-gender school.

Just days earlier, another group of armed men attacked Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School in Kebbi State. About 25 female students were taken, a staff member lost his life during the incident, and another guard was injured. The attackers stormed the school at dawn, firing shots as students prepared for their morning routines.

These back-to-back school invasions have sparked renewed fear among families and communities, who are calling for stronger protection measures to keep children safe.

A quiet evening service in the town of Eruku, Kwara State, was thrown into chaos when armed men attacked a local church, killing two people and abducting the pastor along with several worshippers. The incident happened on Tuesday around 6 p.m., just days after a separate abduction of schoolgirls in another part of the country.

The sudden violence has intensified pressure on the Nigerian government, especially as global voices draw attention to religious tensions in the country. President Bola Tinubu cancelled a planned trip to South Africa and Angola so he could receive urgent security briefings and coordinate a response to the recent attacks. He ordered a stronger security presence in the area and directed agencies to pursue the attackers and rescue the kidnapped victims.

The attack unfolded in the middle of a church service. A video shared online captured worshippers praying moments before gunfire erupted. People scrambled for safety as armed men entered the building, collecting belongings and rounding up several congregants before leading them into the surrounding bush.

Police later confirmed that one person died inside the church while another was found dead nearby. Some witnesses reported seeing at least three fatalities. The exact number of abducted worshippers has not yet been confirmed.

The governor of Kwara has called for immediate reinforcements, urging security agencies to tighten protection across the state to prevent further violence.

Meanwhile, authorities are still searching for the schoolgirls taken from a boarding school in Kebbi State earlier in the week. The vice president is expected to visit the area to meet with families and local leaders as the search continues.

Across Nigeria, communities remain on edge as the country continues to confront overlapping security challenges—from insurgency and banditry to clashes in rural regions.

One of the 25 schoolgirls kidnapped from their dormitory in Kebbi State, northwestern Nigeria, has managed to escape and return home safely.

The girls were taken in the early hours of Monday when armed men stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School. During the attack, a school staff member was killed, and the gunmen fled with the students.

According to the school principal, the escaped student trekked through surrounding forests before reaching home late Monday, only hours after the terrifying abduction. Another student, who was not part of the 25 officially listed as abducted, also managed to escape shortly after the attack.

“They are safe and sound,” the principal confirmed, expressing relief amid ongoing fear and uncertainty.

Mass abductions of students have become a recurring tragedy in northern Nigeria, where armed gangs—ranging from bandits to extremist factions—target schools to draw attention and demand ransom. These groups often operate in remote areas, taking advantage of limited security presence.

While no group has claimed responsibility for this attack, residents and analysts believe it is the work of one of the many gangs known for kidnapping students, villagers, and travelers. Many of these armed groups include former herders involved in long-running clashes over land and resources.

The persistent insecurity has been linked to corruption, lack of accountability for attackers, weak security resources, and porous borders that allow for the easy flow of weapons.

For now, families and communities in Kebbi continue to wait and hope for the safe return of the remaining abducted schoolgirls.
