In a letter dated 22 December 2025, the NFP’s Acting Secretary General, Sunset Bheki Xaba, informed the Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Nontembeko Boyce, that the party’s National Executive Committee had suspended Shinga’s party membership with immediate effect.

The party requested that Shinga be barred from representing the NFP in the legislature and indicated that she would be replaced.

However, Speaker Boyce cited Section 106(3) of the South African Constitution, which sets out the limited circumstances under which a person may lose membership of a provincial legislature.

The Speaker’s office concluded that Shinga’s suspension did not amount to her ceasing to be a party member and that none of the constitutional requirements for removal had been met.

The correspondence was copied to Shinga, highlighting the tension between internal party discipline and constitutional protections.

The NFP’s attempt to replace her as an MPL is effectively stalled unless her membership is formally terminated or she resigns.

MDNtv previously reported that Shinga’s suspension followed her defiance of party instructions during a vote in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli is facing a motion of no confidence in the provincial legislature today, Monday, 15 December 2025, in what is shaping up to be a defining moment for the province’s fragile coalition government.

The motion, tabled by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), accuses Ntuli of financial mismanagement and leadership failures since taking office in June 2024. The MKP, now the largest party in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, says it holds a mandate to govern and is actively lobbying other MPLs to support the motion.

To remove the premier, 41 votes are required. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the National Freedom Party (NFP) are pledging their support, significantly boosting the opposition’s numbers.

Meanwhile, the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) — made up of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Democratic Alliance (DA), African National Congress (ANC) and NFP — insists it is resisting the challenge and defending the current administration.

The IFP Youth Brigade is dismissing the no-confidence bid as political grandstanding that undermines service delivery, as protests and political tensions escalate ahead of the vote.

If the motion succeeds, it topples the premier and reshapes KwaZulu-Natal’s political landscape, placing coalition politics in the province under intense scrutiny.

The battle lines have been drawn for the soul of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) between the Inkatha Freedom Party and the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party(MKP).

The MKP want the Premier of KZN Thani Ntuli removed as the leader of the province through the motion of the confidence which will take place on 15 December at the KZN Legislature.

On Monday, during the IFP NEC meeting, the party threw their weight behind Ntuli accusing the MKP of wanting to destabilising the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).

In a statement released by the IFP on Monday, the party said: “The IFP reaffirms its full confidence in the Premier of KZN Thami Ntuli, ahead of the baseless motion of no confidence brought by the uMkhonto WeSizwe Party (MKP). This motion represents a reckless attempt to destabilise the province at a time when KZN requires focused governance and continuity.

Under Premier Ntuli’s leadership, KwaZulu-Natal has made notable strides, including securing R100 billion in investment—signifying investor confidence in the province’s stability and direction. If the MKP truly believes it has legitimate concerns, it should submit them to the appropriate oversight bodies rather than resorting to political theatrics. Moreover, the MKP must prioritise pressing issues of its own making—especially the safe return of South Africans misled into travelling to Russia to engage in a conflict they neither understood nor consented to,” the statement read.

Responding to the IFP statement, MKP National Spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said the party is making a clear call to all members, supporters and progressive forces across the province to unite behind the Vote of No Confidence against Premier Thami Ntuli and the DA-led government.

“This province cannot continue under a coalition whose political DNA is rooted in protecting privilege, preserving elite control and maintaining the economic structures that keep the African majority on the margins of their own land.

“From the beginning, this coalition was never a government of the people, it was a political experiment engineered to stabilise minority interests at the expense of the suffering black working class. Its purpose has been to manage the crisis of poverty, instead of transforming the conditions that produce it. That is why unemployment grows, services collapse and inequality widens while those who claim to govern, busy themselves with defending inherited power,” he said.

Ndhlela said that the Vote of No Confidence is a confrontation between two visions, one that protects the old order and another that seeks to dismantle it so that the resources of Kwa-Zulu Natal serve the people who built this province with their labour and sacrifice.

“We call upon all progressive Members of the Legislature to recognise that neutrality in a moment of injustice is a luxury of the powerful. The people have spoken through their lived experience, through their poverty, through their exclusion. They want a government that understands their struggle, not one that treats their suffering as background noise to elite negotiations.

“The MK Party is prepared to work with any force committed to breaking the hold of neoliberal governance in KwaZulu Natal. We are ready to build a government rooted in the will of the people, accountable to the people and guided by the clear understanding that true political power belongs to those who produce and sustain society, not those who exploit it,” he said.

Tempers flared outside the KZN legislature when the members of the MKP and the IFP met and police had to intervene to avoid what could have been the repeat of the Sunday incidents where members from both parties clashed in Dube Hostel and it resulted into one person dead and two being admitted in Baragwanath hospital in Soweto in Johannesburg.

The clash between the two parties follows the motion of no confidence which was brought forward by the MKP in an attempt to remove the KZN Premier Ntuli.

This was not the first attempt to oust Ntuli as they brought the same.motion in October which was later turned down by the Speaker

The debate on the motion to oust KZN Premier Thami Ntuli has since been set for 15 December 2025.

The motion emanates from the trip where Ntuli and his other four members of his executive went to the USA and the trip cost tax payers over R2 million.

The KZN Legislature Speaker Nontombeko Boyce said that she was allowing this motion to be held on December 15 which will give the MKP enough time to lure other parties to vote with them.

“I fully recognize the motion from other parties. The legislature is under no obligation to schedule the dates on a specific time by the opposition party. The motion will be debuted on

IFP Youth Brigade Chairperson Thrmbelani Magubane said that the motion of no confidence against Ntuli was a concerning matter for the KZN people.

“This is a disgrace considering that this is wasting the tax payers money. Our Premier has managed to turn things around and accomplish many things. The MKP is playing politics. They don’t like the fact that Ntuli is delivering, when the premier came into the office everything was beyond repair.

“The MKP does not have a clear plan. Yes the premier may have his faults but he is getting there. Ntuli has only been there for about a year now and we say that he should be given an opportunity to run this province as he sees fit,” he said.

Attempts to get comment from the MKP proved fruitless as the MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela”s cellphone rang unanswered.
