A South African-born doctor has been permanently removed from the UK medical register after being found guilty of an unsettling and deeply inappropriate act—putting his semen into a woman’s hot beverages.

Nicholas Chapman, 57, trained as a doctor in Cape Town before moving to the United Kingdom, where he later committed the offense while working in Somerset, England. A court previously found him guilty of sexual misconduct and sentenced him to a community order.

The case came to light after a woman reported a strange, salty taste in her coffee. When she began discarding drinks in the sink, she noticed a thick, gloopy substance left behind. She recalled the unsettling pattern, saying she initially had no idea what the substance was but later suspected something was very wrong. Over time, she estimated at least six incidents where she found a suspicious residue in drinks prepared for her.

Chapman allegedly delivered one to three cups of coffee a week to the woman. Following an investigation, it emerged he had stored hundreds of samples and used them in the drinks.

During the trial, the former doctor tried to justify his actions by claiming he suffered from a condition that caused him to unintentionally release semen while using the toilet. He also suggested, without evidence, that someone else may have tampered with the drinks as a prank. The court rejected both explanations.

Following the guilty verdict, he was suspended from his job at a local health institution and has now been officially removed from the register, effectively ending his medical career in the UK.

She was only six years old. At that age, a child should be giggling about birthday cake, holding her favourite toy, maybe trying to tie her own shoelaces. Instead, on a day meant to be filled with joy, her world shattered—at the hands of the one person meant to keep her safe: her father.

What happened behind closed doors was unspeakable. But she found the strength to speak.

Years later, her bravery brought justice. A court sentenced her father to life in prison, ensuring he would never again harm her—or any other child. It was the end of a long and painful journey that began with a little girl choosing to tell the truth, even when it was terrifying.

He had tried to hide what he did. He cleaned her wounds in silence. He lied to police. He blamed someone else. But the truth, no matter how painful, has a way of pushing through.

And when that truth came out, it came with strength: her words, her courage, her pain laid bare in a courtroom that listened—really listened.

The judge didn’t just deliver a sentence. They delivered a message: that a father’s role is to protect, not destroy. That betrayal this deep cannot go unanswered.

But the most powerful person in that courtroom wasn’t wearing a robe or standing at the prosecutor’s table. It was a child who survived the unthinkable and still found the courage to speak.

Support teams are now walking beside her as she begins the long process of healing—emotionally, physically, spiritually. They’re helping her reclaim her voice, her worth, her sense of safety.

This case is not just about justice—it’s about what happens when children are believed. When families choose not to look away. When the system works to protect the vulnerable, not silence them.

To the young girl at the center of this heartbreaking story: your bravery is unforgettable. You are more than what happened to you. You are seen. You are believed. And because you spoke up, the world is a little bit safer.

Let this be a reminder to us all—listen to children. Believe them. Protect them. And never stop fighting for a world where no child has to survive what she did.

The bravery of a victim, determination of a dedicated investigation officer and the continued resilience of a prosecutor, were the crucial factors that ensured the successful prosecution of a man for his actions of 12 years ago.

A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of his 10-year-old niece in January 2012. The successful conviction, delivered by the Bloemfontein Regional Court on Friday 13 June 2025 comes after the survivor came forward in 2024.

In August 2024, the now 21-year-old woman disclosed the abuse to a social worker during a counselling session. She reported that the accused, a trusted family member, began sexually abusing her when she was just 10 years old, escalating from digital penetration to rape at a residence in Rocklands, Bloemfontein.

The case was handed to Sergeant Matlale Sello from the Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, who investigated thoroughly despite the lack of DNA evidence and the passage of time. Her detailed investigation, combined with the resilience of the survivor and the skilled prosecution by Regional Court Prosecutor Lemohang Mohapi, led to a conviction.

It was revealed during sentencing that the accused was on parole for a prior rape conviction at the time of the offence—an aggravating factor that underscored the court’s decision to impose life imprisonment. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be entered into the National Sexual Offences Register.

Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, Provincial Commissioner of the Police in the Free State, praised the team:

“Your dedication to a case which took place more than a decade ago is a testimony of an investigating officer who takes pride in bringing justice to a victim who was crippled with fear for years. She is now victorious in standing up against Gender-Based Violence—a social ill in our society. This is a groundbreaking sentence that is commendable. Well done.”

For more than a year, Zamile Nongogo played a quiet but costly role in a scheme that left a financial institution short by over R600,000. Now, the 56-year-old from the Eastern Cape has been sentenced to six years in prison — though he won’t be serving time immediately, as the sentence has been fully suspended for five years.

The East London Commercial Crimes Court handed down the sentence this week, following a years-long investigation by the Hawks, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

Nongogo, described by investigators as the “mastermind,” was arrested back in October 2019 alongside his accomplice, Thobani Mabizela. Their operation ran from January 2018 to February 2019, targeting vehicle finance institutions.

According to Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, Nongogo helped individuals who did not qualify for car finance obtain it by creating fake payslips and employment documents. These were then submitted to a financial institution, and after verification calls were made to fictional employers, vehicle loans were approved.

Cars were delivered to the clients — but not a single repayment was ever made. Once the fraud was detected, the matter was handed over to the Hawks.

Mabizela was found guilty in April and is due to be sentenced on June 30, 2025.

While Nongogo received a suspended sentence on the condition that he does not commit further fraud, his legal troubles are far from over. He remains in custody, as he is still facing additional charges in other ongoing matters.

He has also been declared unfit to own a firearm.

The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court has on the 3 June 2025 sentenced Abednego Desmond Mbuyane (39) to 12 years’ direct imprisonment for housebreaking and the murder of his wife’s boyfriend, Thamsanqa Sbusiso Nkosi.

The conviction relates to an incident that occurred on 15 April 2023 at Kwanyoni Lodge in Nelspruit. On that day, the accused became suspicious of his wife’s whereabouts after multiple unanswered phone calls. He tracked the vehicle she was driving using a GPS tracking device, which led him to the lodge.

Upon arrival, he identified the room where the vehicle was parked nearby. After knocking without response, he forcibly entered by kicking the door open. Inside, he found his wife and the deceased. An altercation ensued, prompting the wife and Nkosi to flee the room. The accused pursued the deceased and fatally shot him in the head and shoulder before fleeing the scene. He later handed himself over to the police. The case docket was handed to the Hawks’ Nelspruit-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit for further investigation.

During court proceedings, the accused pleaded guilty to murder and housebreaking. However, the State rejected the plea because the murder was premeditated. The matter proceeded to trial. State Advocate Senzo Zindela led compelling testimony from the accused’s wife and an eyewitness, both of whom corroborated the events leading up to the murder. In mitigation, the accused claimed he had no intention to kill and had merely sought to confront his wife.

After evaluating all the evidence presented, the court convicted Mbuyane of housebreaking and murder. In sentencing, the court considered that the accused had been in custody since his arrest. He was sentenced to 5 years’ imprisonment for housebreaking and 12 years’ imprisonment for murder. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective sentence of 12 years’ direct imprisonment. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) notes the sentence and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to delivering justice for victims of violent crime. The NPA continues to prosecute serious cases daily, upholding the rule of law and strengthening public confidence in the justice system.

That night, her mother, Racquel “Kelly” Smith, told police she had left Joshlin in the care of her boyfriend, Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis, while she went to work. But within days, Kelly, Appollis, and their friend Steveno “Steffie” van Rhyn were arrested—accused of something that shocked the entire country: kidnapping and human trafficking.

The unimaginable was confirmed weeks later in court. Witnesses testified, including Lourentia “Renz” Lombaard, who admitted being part of a plan to sell Joshlin to a traditional healer—a sangoma—for R20,000. On May 2, Kelly, Appollis, and Van Rhyn were found guilty. They were sentenced to life in prison, with an additional 10 years for kidnapping, to run concurrently.

Judge Nathan Erasmus didn’t mince words.

“They showed no remorse. While the community searched, while a child was missing, they laughed, they celebrated,” he said. “They betrayed the trust Joshlin had in them—especially you, Ms. Smith, as her mother.”

For José Emke, that betrayal cuts deepest.

“The sentencing is bittersweet,” he said outside court. “I’m relieved they won’t hurt another child. But I’m heartbroken, because I still don’t know where my little girl is.”

José has another daughter with Kelly—a younger child now caught in the aftermath of a nightmare.

“She asks me every day: ‘Where is my sister?’ And I have no answer. That’s what tears me apart. I want to protect her, but how do I explain something like this to a child?”

Despite the horrific details that emerged during the trial, José still believes Joshlin is alive.

“She’s young. She still has a whole life to live. I feel she’s out there somewhere. I just can’t rest until I know where she is.”

His questions are many—but one looms larger than the rest.

“Why did Kelly wait until I was gone to do this? I was only in the Northern Cape for a short while. I didn’t abandon my child. I didn’t walk away. So why, when my back was turned, did she choose this path?”

José said he recently received a call from Joshlin’s godmother, Natasha Andrews. She told him Kelly wanted to speak to their younger daughter.

“I said no. Not until I know the truth. Not until I hear it from Kelly’s own mouth. Until then, I won’t let her near our child. Kelly is dangerous. She’s manipulative. I believe she planned this. She set it in motion. And she still hasn’t told the full story.”

Police remain committed to finding Joshlin. Western Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, promised the search would not stop.

“We are working around the clock. We’re even collaborating with Interpol. We will not give up until we know what happened to Joshlin—and where she is.”

Child advocacy group Women and Men Against Child Abuse welcomed the life sentences but said more must be done.

“Joshlin was just six when she was sold like livestock. The mother’s involvement is what truly horrifies us. How does a mother even consider this? There are still too many unanswered questions. Someone paid for that child. And someone took her.”

As Child Protection Week begins in South Africa, the case of Joshlin Smith has become a chilling reminder of the dangers children face—even from those meant to protect them.

José Emke is now just a father searching for the truth.

“My message to Kelly is simple,” he said, pausing as emotion caught in his throat. “I just want to hear the truth—from her mouth.”

Ngomane was convicted on Friday 23 May by the Theunissen regional court on both charges, receiving 20 years imprisonment for murder and 10 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances. Five years of the robbery sentence will run concurrently with the murder sentence, meaning he will serve an effective 25 years behind bars.

The court heard that the incident happened on the night of 13 May 2018, when the 68-year-old deceased Sabata Tsoai, was attacked while at his residence. His hands and feet were tied with cables, brutally assaulted and killed. His body was discovered a day later, with his property scattered throughout the house in Theunissen.

A firearm safe was found open with a missing firearm and his cellphone.

The relentless investigation by Constable Sechele Machesa who upon receiving the case in 2020, worked tirelessly to gather enough evidence that assisted him to locate and arrest the murderer in 2021. His evidence gathering skills and investigation proved crucial in securing the conviction. The prosecution team, led by Advocate Edwin Munyai and Dr. Itumeleng Maklein, successfully relied solely on circumstantial evidence to secure a conviction on both charges.

This conviction and sentence serve as a testament to the dedication of the South African Police Service and the National Prosecuting Authority in ensuring that perpetrators of heinous crimes are brought to justice.

According to the Free State Policespokesperson Sergent Mahlomola Kareli

the conviction comes from an investigation initiated on 1 August 2023, following allegations of sexual abuse within his home. The mother who is the complainant reported the case regarding her 14-year-old daughter.

Investigations by Sergeant Frans Mofokeng revealed that the accused who is the victim’s stepfather, had engaged in sexual grooming of the 14-year-old victim since she was 12 years old, between 2021 and 2023, at their residence in Bethlehem. It was also revealed that the accused would allegedly compel the victim to watch pornographic material.

The 14-year-old victim experienced a change in behavior and was referred to a psychologist, where she disclosed the abuse, leading to the registration of a case while the accused was in the United States of America.

The stepfather was arrested on 13 November 2023, upon his arrival at OR Tambo International Airport.

During the trial, Mr. Nhlapo as prosecutor said the accused pleaded guilty to sexual grooming of the 14-year-old and was found guilty of sexual grooming and sentenced to six years imprisonment, with half of the sentence suspended for five years.
