US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will temporarily oversee Venezuela’s administration following the reported capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US military forces.

Speaking from Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said the intervention was designed to ensure a controlled and peaceful transition of power after years of political and economic instability in the South American nation.

“We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition,” Trump told reporters. “We want peace, liberty, and justice for the great people of Venezuela.”

Trump emphasised that the United States does not intend to install a rushed or imposed leadership, saying Washington wants to avoid creating further instability.
