Three nabbed after alleged hitchhiker robbery in Wolmaransstad
A woman, who was hitchhiking from Wolmaransstad to Vryburg, was allegedly robbed at gunpoint after accepting a lift from occupants of a white Volkswagen Polo, leading to the arrest of three suspects in Makwassie.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, at approximately 15:20 along the Wolmaransstad/Schweizer-Reneke Road.
It is alleged that about three kilometers outside Wolmaransstad, the driver pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the victim and demanded her money and personal belongings. She was allegedly dropped off at an isolated area.
Unknown to the suspects, the victim had concealed her cellphone and managed to photograph the vehicle.
The photograph was circulated through community groups, resulting in a lookout being issued.
Following a swift police response to information received, two males and a female, aged between 26 and 39, were traced and arrested in Makwassie. The victim’s property was also recovered.
Preliminary investigation established that the firearm allegedly used during the robbery was an imitation firearm, and an additional charge in terms of the Firearms Control Act is expected to be added.
The owner of the vehicle has also been linked to an alleged business robbery that occurred on Sunday along the Broadbent N12 in Wolmaransstad.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court on Friday (today), facing charges relating to the alleged robbery and possession of an imitation firearm, as well as the related business robbery.
