Zolani Tete murder trial postponed to December
The murder trial of former boxing world champion Zolani Tete has been postponed to 8 December to allow investigators more time to complete their investigations.
Four accused appeared in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, including wheelchair-bound Uzuzole Goqwana, who is alleged to have masterminded the attack.
Investigators are still trying to establish the whereabouts of a fifth suspect, who has not yet been arrested.
Tete was shot and killed outside his home in Mdantsane in August. His girlfriend survived the attack.
The accused face charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Meanwhile, Tete’s father, Zolile, says he is relieved that the men accused of killing his son have been denied bail, but has chosen to forgive them.
Speaking outside court after Goqwana and Sinebhongo Qase were denied bail last month, Zolile said holding a grudge would not bring his son back.
“I have forgiven all of them and their families. It will never bring Zolani back, but I have made peace with the fact,” Zolile said.
He said the court’s decision had brought some relief, but he did not want to engage with the accused’s families.
“It is still painful and I don’t want to speak to their families, but I’m not fighting with them. There is nothing I can do. I repeat, it will never bring Zolani back,” he said.
Zolile also revealed that Tete’s eight-year-old son remains traumatised by the shooting.
The boy was in the back seat of the vehicle when Tete was ambushed outside his Mdantsane home and is reportedly still startled by loud noises.
Three children were in the car when the former champion was gunned down.
