Petro de Luanda Fight Back Against Referee Abongile Tom
A red card after one minute, a 2-0 defeat, and now a formal complaint to CAF had reportedly been laid.
Petro de Luanda have taken their grievances to the Confederation of African Football after a bruising 2-0 loss to Scottland FC in Zimbabwe on Sunday.
The Angolan club are not letting the result pass quietly after losing their first leg of the Caf Champions League second preliminary round match.
The biggest flashpoint came almost immediately. Goalkeeper Hugo Marques was sent off after just one minute, and the decision has become the centrepiece of Petro’s complaint.
The club is also unhappy with the overall handling of the match by South African top referee Abongile Tom.
The story took an unexpected turn when Marques revealed that Tom had apologised to him after the final whistle and admitted the red card was a mistake. The goalkeeper reportedly shared the admission in a post on his Instagram account on Monday.
Petro have asked CAF to investigate the officiating and to impose possible suspensions if wrongdoing is established. Whether the governing body acts on the request will now be closely watched across the continent.
