OFCOLACO, LIMPOPO: Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s agricultural sector is proving to be a major economic lifeline, with Beerseun Boerdery employing up to 1,200 people and injecting approximately R5 million monthly into workers’ salaries.

Mayor Ngobeni, accompanied by members of the Executive Committee and municipal officials, met with Beerseun Boerdery chief executive officer Kobus de Beer and his wife, Erna de Beer, to strengthen relations between the municipality and the agricultural business while exploring opportunities to stimulate local economic growth.

The farm produces a range of fresh agricultural produce, including tomatoes, chillies, green beans, green peppers and maize. Its products reach major retail chains such as Checkers, Woolworths, Pick n Pay and Shoprite.

With a workforce estimated at between 1,000 and 1,200 employees, approximately 48% of whom are residents of Greater Tzaneen Municipality, the business plays a significant role in supporting household incomes and sustaining livelihoods in the area.

Beerseun Boerdery also highlighted its commitment to recruiting local residents, maintaining positive relations with surrounding communities and creating opportunities for employees to develop and grow within the sector.

The company indicated that excessive rainfall had resulted in losses running into millions of rand, highlighting the vulnerability of agricultural operations to adverse weather conditions and the importance of reliable infrastructure.

Poor road conditions can also affect the movement of agricultural produce, making cooperation between farmers and local government essential to ensuring efficient transportation and protecting the sector’s contribution to the local economy.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of building stronger partnerships between the municipality and private agricultural businesses to attract investment, protect existing jobs and unlock further economic opportunities for communities.

As the municipality continues to engage with businesses operating within its jurisdiction, collaboration with the agricultural sector remains critical to advancing local economic development and ensuring that the benefits of investment reach residents.
