Aden McCarthy has a Champions League goal on his CV, and he never saw it coming.

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender found the net for Sabah FK in their 2-1 defeat to German giants Borussia Dortmund, his first goal for the Azerbaijani club since joining in the off-season.

The 22-year-old son of former Bafana Bafana defender Fabian McCarthy said the moment came completely out of nowhere.

“I showed it tonight, I never expected to score, you don’t plan for these things, but it just happened in the moment, so I am very happy,” he told ANews.

Sabah couldn’t turn it into a result, but McCarthy refuses to let the scoreline dim the occasion, insisting it proves nothing is off the table against any opponent.

“It just shows anything is possible, no matter who you come against, the ball is round, anything is possible, so as long as you put yourself in those positions to score, it can happen,” he said.

For a young South African building his career abroad, scoring against one of Europe’s biggest names is a milestone he won’t forget, and a reminder that the biggest stages are there for the taking.
